The best curly birch pattern is most often found on the surface of the wood, so despite their size, these are an excellent material for making small wooden objects. Surface sawn boards are often used to make beautiful jewelry or pens, for example.
You can see examples of the surface sawn boards in the pictures, but because the trunks still contained moisture when sawn, the surface of the boards may be colored yellow. However, this color defect can be removed by sanding a small layer off the surface of the wood.
The freshness of the boards varies, so they may require additional drying. However, these small boards dry very quickly.
